Shiva Shakthi

This rare ragam is a Janya of Natakapriya.  When I heard it for the first time, its resemblance to Hindolam was immediately felt.  Since I did not have the present day tools at that time, I could not find out the reason.  I have given below the notes for the two ragams and the similarity could be felt.  More than Hindolam, it is Varamu ( shuddha hindolam ) which looks the closest.

Hindolam                 S G2 M1 D1 N2 S      S N2 D1 M1 G2 S
Shivashakti              S G2 M1 D2 S            S N2 D2 M1 G2 S
Shuddha HindolamS G2 M1 D2 N2 S      S N2 D2 M1 G2 S
( One of my subsequent write ups is on Varamu where I will take it up elaborately )
In some write ups, this ragam is also indicated as a derivative of Karaharapriya.

I became familiar with this ragam after listening to GNB's Sri Chakra Nilaye.  I heard it long back and when I wanted to write about this ragam, that was the first song that came to my mind.  It is rendered by GNB's disciple's disciple- Sudha Raghunathan.  To quote GNB, "Whenever I was in a contemplative mood, I used to get visions of musical forms. I desired to give them a permanent form by shaping them into kirtanas. But thereafter, I did not give them a second look. I left it to my disciples to make the best use of them."  Another famous musician S Rajam has termed this decision as Sangeetha Drogam. To know the difference between the singing of the Guru and the disciple, listen to the same song rendered by the one and only ML Vasanthakumari

Another disciple of GNB, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Thrissur V Ramachandran sings another composition of his Master " Vinutapalini " in this ragam.

Nithyashri sings Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi's  "Thaka Thaka Thaka Thakavendru aadomo". I understand that the song was tuned by Nithyasri's mother Smt Lalitha Sivakumar     ( Palghat Mani Iyer's daughter ).   Most of you might be knowing about Bharathi's total devotion to Mother Goddess and Shakthi was his favourite manifestation of the Mother. It is quite appropriate that a song on Shakthi is tuned in Shivashkathi ragam!   I love this song not only for the lyrics but also the spirited rendition of Nithyasri.

I could not get any film songs in this ragam.  Similarly I am not successful in getting the Hindustani ragam closest to this ragam.  Either Chandrakauns or Malkauns could be close and as I have already covered both of them, I am not repeating them here.
